Accidents caused by ignition of aerosols
The aim of the research was to evaluate the ignition risk of aerosols under normal foreseeable conditions of use, and in particular to assess the number of incidents, injuries and fatalities caused by ignition of aerosol dispensers in several EU member states.
Summary: The number of accidents and any associated injuries and fatalities caused by igniting aerosols is very small. Based on the five countries for which data has been gathered and grossing up to the total EU, there are an estimated 120 incidents, 75 injuries (of which 25 are serious requiring in-patient treatment) and 0.35 deaths per annum.
Based on the number of accidents per million products purchased each year, aerosols present a negligible fire risk to consumers compared to other commonly used consumer products, such as washing machines, upholstered furniture, televisions and clothing.
