Safe As Houses: Recommendations for child safe rental properties in New Zealand
The publication gives rental property owners and managers an overview of child unintentional injuries in New Zealand and how to prevent them. Between 2007-2011 an average of 45 children aged 0 to 9 years died each year from unintentional injuries sustained in a home environment. Children aged 0 to 4 years accounted for 42 of these deaths per year and over a five year period to 2013, a total of 11,700 children aged between 0 to 9 years were admitted to hospital due to suffering an unintentional injury within a home. In ‘Safe As Houses’ we offer owners and managers a set of recommendations that, taken together and over time, should reduce what is an unacceptably high burden of child injury in New Zealand.
